Apple believes in the future of augmented reality, and it’s no secret. Apple has invested in AR technology on multiple occasions and has been rumored to be working on a headset for the near future. Because according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s AR headset may be available by the end of 2022.
The AR headset will include two chipsets, according to Koo, one of which is based on the M1 chipset that Apple launched for its Mac computers towards the end of 2020. One of the chipsets will be more powerful and handle sensor-related functions, while the other will be less powerful and act as a secondary processor.
It’s unclear if a smartphone-based AR headset will be named the “AR”, but there’s a good chance it’ll be called something similar.
This won’t be a pure AR device, so don’t expect Google Glass levels of immersion just yet. It appears to be something of a crossbreed VR/AR headset, with KGI Analyst Kuo claiming that it will include two Sony 4K micro OLED displays that will allow the headset to support both virtual reality and augmented reality.
The Apple-branded device, which is known in the company as an iWatch, will ship in three different sizes. It has a touchscreen display with Force Touch technology and motion sensors for motion gaming. The headset is wireless, powered by Bluetooth 4.1 + EDR, and compatible with iPhone 7 or later models that support certain functions like Siri or Facetime over WiFi .
What’s interesting is that Apple plans to make this a standalone device that does not require a tether to other Apple products like the Mac or iPhone. It’s unclear how much this headset would cost, but we’ve heard it won’t be cheap and might target developers initially rather than customers, but we’ll have to wait till 2022 to see if this rumor pans out.
